" (Giovanni Russonello, The NY Times,

Sentez la fierté – 568 Broadway
Jusqu'au 30 juin 2019 – New York

Le groupe d'activistes à but non lucratif The Ally Coalition a imaginé une expérience … (en savoir plus)

Cyrilla Mozenter: voir pourquoi – Galerie Lesley Heller
Jusqu'au 30 juin 2019 – New York

The artworks further explore Mozenter's abstract narratives of text and sound—animated through personal pictographic imagery—and the deconstruction of letters as both images and sounds.
Mozenter's practice is influenced by the writings of Gertrude Stein. Explorations of the phonetic sounds of letters have also been a reoccurring element in Mozenter's work, doubling at times as the works' titles. The letters and titles are playful and absurd; and defy singular interpretations.

JF Lynch: Word Drawings – Lesley Heller Gallery
Through June 30, 2019 – New York

"If you set pen to paper, is the letter "i" a written sound sign or a drawn glyph of a standing figure? When you look at a narrative drawing and understand the story, have you not just read the drawing?"
Lesley Heller Gallery is pleased to present the first New York solo show of JF Lynch in our Project Space. Lynch is an artist known for his monochromatic works that feature abstracted letters and words set within a dark expanse. Working predominantly with charcoal on paper or canvas, Lynch's work bridges painting, drawing, and writing.

THE RITUAL – New Perspectives Studio
Through June 30, 2019 – New York

THE RITUAL by Zeno Obi Constance
directed by Melody Brooks, associate director Shykia Fields
with: Zakiya Baptiste, Janelle Clayton, Angela Fraser, Nadege Matteis, Cassandra Ogbozor
“…the girls in THE RITUAL remind us that we mustn't underestimate young people; while at the same time, we must take responsibility for what they reflect back to us.” nytheatre.com
It’s Friday morning, first period at Senior Secondary School in Trinidad and Omega is pregnant. Through “ritual” portrayals of the world around them her friends, five students, come to understand that the real key to empowerment lies within them. The play is highly stylized—each actor plays one of the girls as well as members from their community—lecherous taxi drivers; sanctimonious bourgeois; attractive Rasta boys; pompous judges and frightened parents.
New Perspectives Theatre Company and Banana Boat Productions are reprising their acclaimed production of this ground-breaking play to celebrate its 40th Anniversary. It earned Mr. Constance both fame and notoriety when it was cut from Trinidadian national television in 1979 in mid-broadcast due to its themes, and the characters' treatment of the societal forces t… (read more)

7 Franklin Place

May 25, 2019
For Immediate Release:
NYA Gallery is pleased to announce a group exhibition focused on the theme of brilliance, as curated by Shane Townley. In media ranging from painting to sculpture to skateboards, over forty artists will examine the formal properties of light and illumination as well as consider the idea of artistic genius or brilliance. Throughout the history of art, artists have manipulated light in order to suggest or symbolize intellectual enlightenment, spiritual awakening, and a host of other representational purposes. In addition to exploring the nature of light, the cultural producers assembled for this exhibition will probe contemporary notions of the artist, the practitioner, the creator. Overall, they present a multiplicity of responses to this historic discourse and shed new light on how we think about the role of the artist in the twenty-first century. In Rafael Colon’s masterful appropriation of Gustav Klimt’s infamous painting The Kiss (1907-08), he re-positions the subjects of the original painting ont… (read more)

Along the way, multi-disciplinary performances will reinterpret the legendary art parties attended by artworld luminaries—Jasper Johns, John Giorno, William S. Burroughs, Eve Hesse, Jonas Mekas, Roy Lichtenstein, LeRoi Jones, Diane DiPrima, Sol LeWitt, Andy Warhol, and more—against the backdrop of Rothko’s struggle between achieving success and selling out. Audiences and performers will sit around a table together in the paint-splattered space and experience a theatrical conjuring of artistic ghosts whose impact echoes till this day.

Danny Says Screening with Danny Fields: A Benefit for WFMU – Anthology Film Archive
July 02, 2019 – New York

Please join us for a film screening of the documentary Danny Says, followed by a Q&A, on July 2nd at Anthology Film Archives.
WFMU is proud to host a fundraiser at Anthology Film Archives featuring a screening of the documentary Danny Says and followed by a Q&A with music legend Danny Fields (and WFMU freeform pioneer!), filmmaker Brendan Toller and WFMU's own Dave the Spazz moderating the conversation. This is an extremely rare appearance as Danny has only done three Q&A's for the film total and only ONE in the US.
Danny Says is a documentary on the life and times of Danny Fields. Since 1966, Danny Fields has played a pivotal role in music and “culture” of the late 20th century: working for the Doors, Cream, Lou Reed, Nico, Judy Collins and managing groundbreaking artists like the Stooges, the MC5 and the Ramones. Danny Says follows Fields from Phi Beta Kappa whiz-kid, to Harvard Law dropout, to the Warhol Silver Factory, to Director of Publicity at Elektra Records, to “punk pioneer” and beyond. Danny’s taste and opinion, once deemed defiant and radical, has turned out to have been prescient. Danny Says is a story of marginal turning mainstream, avant garde turning prophetic, … (read more)

An authentic master and guru of the Hammond B–3 organ for over five decades, Dr. Lonnie Smith has been featured on over 70 albums, and has recorded and performed with a virtual "Who's Who" of jazz, blues and R&B legends. Smith's career took off when he joined George Benson's group in the early '60s; that led to Lonnie's first album as a leader (Finger Lickin' Good, released 1966 on Columbia), his affiliation with saxophonist Lou Donaldson, and his signing to Blue Note Records. As a leader, Lonnie Smith released such soul jazz classics as Think!,Turning Point, Move Your Hand, and Drives; post–Blue Note, he remained a consistent presence on the national jazz charts with his albums for Kudu, Groove Merchant, T.K., Scufflin', Criss Cross and Palmetto. His unpredictable, insatiable musical taste insures that no genre is safe: The Doctor has recorded everything from covers of the Beatles, the Stylistics and the Eurythmics to tributes to Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane and Beck, leading ensembles that range from his tight–knit working trio to a fifteen–piece big band. Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio – Jazz Standard
July 03, 2019 – New York

Revolutionary Summer – New-York Historical Society
July 04, 2019 – New York

This summer, New-York Historical Society celebrates the American Revolution with a feast of historical displays and programming, including an outdoor installation of a full-scale replica of George Washington's original Revolutionary War campaign tent. Visitors can step inside the so-called "first Oval Office" and experience this founding site of America's democracy. On view on select days, the marquee is a loan from the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. Also on display are artifacts, a diorama with toy soldiers depicting Washington's encampment, and a recently discovered watercolor by Pierre Charles L'Enfant depicting the Continental Army encamped at Verplanck's Point, New York, in 1782. Throughout the summer, programming explores Washington's leadership, the military footprint along the Hudson River, and the diverse composition of the Revolutionary Army forces, while reenactor encampments bring history to life for visitors of all ages.

Dr. Lonnie Smith Octet – Jazz Standard
July 05, 2019 – New York

Under the direction of the wizard of the Hammond B3, this exceptional aggregation draws on a deep pool of jazz talent, combining veteran players like Chris Potter with such spirited up–and–comers as saxophonist Alexa Tarantino. "Dr. Lonnie Smith can play fast and fierce yet is often most affecting in the quietest moments, deep in a ballad or winding down from a climactic chorus. He can seem like a preacher possessed or a meditative monk—or both—within the same song…'I hear everything in that organ,' he said. 'It's got the sun and the moon, the earth and the water. That's how it feels to me.'" (Larry Blumenthal, The Wall Street Journal, 7.18.2012)

Warhol Women – Lévy Gorvy
Through July 05, 2019 – New York

Lévy Gorvy is pleased to announce Warhol Women, an exhibition devoted exclusively to Andy Warhol’s portraits of women from the early 1960s through the 1980s. On view from April 25 through June 15 at Lévy Gorvy’s landmark building on Madison Avenue, the selection of paintings, covering the full scope of Warhol’s career, invites the viewer to ponder the artist’s complex and often contradictory relationship to myths and ideals of femininity, beauty, and power. Over the course of his career, Warhol depicted an astonishing range of women, from heiresses and Hollywood stars to drag queens and denizens of New York’s underground art scene. Through paintings riotous and defiant, vulnerable and demure, Warhol Women sheds fresh light on both the artist’s oeuvre and our present moment, wherein questions of female empowerment and the construction of identity through images are as urgent as ever.

The Golden Girls Musical Parody: Pride Edition – HERE Arts Center
Through July 06, 2019 – NYC

THE ORIGINAL GOLDEN GIRLS MUSICAL PARODY is back with a special Pride Edition for only 3 dragtastic weeks to celebrate WorldPride, NYC Pride and Stonewall 50, featuring an original pop score, a 1980’s fashion show, and the Ultimate Golden Girls Trivia Challenge. “Hilariously Outsized” — The New York Times
The Golden Girls Musical Parody: Pride Edition is an official partner of WorldPride 2019, NYC Pride and Stonewall 50.
The Golden Girls are getting ready for the annual Shady Pines Retirement Home Gay Pride Talent Show when down on his luck guest star, Ricky Martin, moves in next door. What ensues is a hilarious feud that can only end with one act as the most talented "queens" of Shady Pines.
Featuring an original pop score, a 1980's fashion show, and the Ultimate Golden Girls Trivia Challenge, “THE GOLDEN GIRLS MUSICAL PARODY – PRIDE EDITION is a highly irreverent, yet loving send-up of TV's The Golden Girls that proves to be simultaneously evocative of the greatest moments from the original sitcom and a show with a voice all its own.” —Theatremania

Second Stage Theater – The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts
Through July 06, 2019 – New York

Come celebrate the decades of plays and musicals that have defined Second Stage as the home for living American playwrights.
In 1979, a new theater was born with a novel idea: give a second chance to American plays that are worthy of a second look. Second Stage Theater started in a cramped 100-seat space on the 16th floor of a hotel on the Upper West Side. That first production was far from an easy or auspicious launch – the director and three actors quit, one at the very last minute (luckily, a young actor named Jeff Daniels agreed to step in and perform).

The Comedian's Tragedy – Access Theater Black Box
Through July 06, 2019 – New York

An edgy, supernatural love story about Aristophanes struggling with his muse in Ancient Greece, written by Matthew Amendt.
423 BCE. The Gods are hungry. The greatest city of her age, Athens has fallen: wracked with plague, war, drink, lust, gods, demons, and a dark fog of nihilism eating away at her light. Censored and labeled a pervert for standing up to the state, a young Aristophanes passes his nights in a haze of booze and sex, spitting into the face of tomorrow with the courage of the damned. When the unlikeliest of heroes emerges, can a guilty, drunken soul become Orpheus and sing life back into the ashes? An edgy supernatural love story costumed in the present but taking place in Ancient Athens’ hedonistic height, The Comedian’s Tragedy is a rollercoaster of violence, love, revenge, low comedy and high ideas. Imagine a play that brings together the best heat, the fire of American Acting, marries it to the icy clarity of Classical Tragedy, and out of the steam of that collision tells a new story of the place we all began. When there’s no tomorrow, what are you doing tonight?
Bill McCallum directs a cast of eleven performers with credits spanning Broadway, Off-Broadwa… (read more)

July 07, 2019 – New York

#StarringJohnCho Exhibition – Pearl River Mart Gallery
Through July 08, 2019 – New York

It’s not just a hashtag — it’s a cultural movement. Screenwriter, creative strategist, and cultural activist William Yu started the viral #StarringJohnCho project to address the lack of Asian American representation in Hollywood and to bring to life the idea of an Asian American leading actor.
Now the hashtag is brought to life in a multimedia installation. Reminiscent of a movie theater lobby, the installation invites viewers to the imagined world of John Cho as a lead actor, and makes tangible the possibilities for a new kind of movie going experience for Asian Americans.
See in person what movies like The Avengers, Jurassic World, and (500) Days of Summer would look like with an Asian American star. And, become a superhero yourself with the show's interactive portion!
Join us in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month for the opening reception: May 18, 5 to 7pm. Free and open to the public.

A Coming-of-Age-Play for the They/Them Generation written by queer black/filipinx playwright Roger Q. Mason.
Meet the Howard family: Theo is a busy black attorney; Hazel is his dutiful Filipina wife; and their son is bright, promising Jonathan. No, fuck that – here’s the Howard family: Theo has been pushed in the closet; Hazel’s Tiger mom tactics have kept him there; and all Jonathan wants to do is kiss Winnie, wear femme clothes, and love themself.
Part religious rite, part dance/performance, THE WHITE DRESS is Jonathan Howard’s genderqueer coming-of-age journey through familial shaming, peer bullying, and unrequited love to redefine what male looks, sounds and feels like. Underscored live by Brooklyn-based DJ SunSon PDX and directed and choreographed by Adin Walker, THE WHITE DRESS features a music and movement score that accentuates Jonathan’s odyssey to be free in their own skin.
This upcoming production comes after an acclaimed workshop production as part of the Araca Project, which was advocated for by influencers including Condola Rashad and Sara Ramirez.
Playwright Roger Q. Mason’s lauded script has been named Finalist for The Lark Playwrights' Week and the ina… (read more)

Exhibition opening: Woman Between Inhaling and Exhaling – Bohemian National Hall
Jusqu'au 28 juillet 2019 – New York

(2nd Floor) An opening for the exhibition "Woman Between Inhaling and Exhaling" featuring photographs by Czech documentary photographer Dana Kyndrova who examines the many facets of women's lives. The presented photographs – shot primarily in the former Czechoslovakia and later in the Czech Republic, but also in some Western countries – show the precious moments of daily life, child birth, the tensions of school exams, falling in love. The project called "Woman Between Inhaling and Exhaling" includes photographs from the 1970s – 1990s, and its aim is to capture the life of a woman in its full variety, from birth to death. The project is divided into seven parts – adolescence, maternity and family, fun, work, eroticism, faith, and old age. Apart from the objective chronology of life's pilgrimage of a human being, or more precisely, of a woman, the photographs perceive the principal life values, which accompany and influence us during our entire existence. The theme is more or less general; thus the question is not to portray a particular environment or a characteristics of a certain country. One could say the woman portrayed is a „European" woman. A substantial part of the photograp… (read more)

Among Others: Photography and the Group – The Morgan Library & Museum
Through August 18, 2019 – Manhattan

Composed chiefly of works in the Morgan's collection, this exhibition explores how photographers have represented the bonds uniting people, whether in group portraits or in serial imagery. In arranged sittings, form is content: when commissioned to photograph the royals of Germany and England at a wedding in 1894, James Russell and Son's Studio instinctively centered its composition around the family's matriarch, Queen Victoria. Camera artists sometimes insert themselves into the action, as Susan Meiselas did when mingling with carnival strippers, first to portray them behind the scenes and then to photograph those in the audience from a performer's perspective. Action can also be a pose: in 1970, when asked to create a positive poster image for the Gay Liberation Front, Peter Hujar asked the group's members to run toward him on the street, enacting their slogan, "Come Out!!" Ingenuity may be called for when one's subjects are all too well-known: a press photographer, Jean-Pierre Ducatez, appealed to the primal desires of Beatles fans by zeroing in on the lips of each band member, creating a captivating game of who's-who. Bringing together works from the 1860s to the present, Among… (read more)

Walt Whitman: Bard of Democracy – The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 15, 2019 – Manhattan

"Comrades! I am the bard of Democracy," Walt Whitman announced in a notebook in 1859. Over his 73 years (1819–1892), he essentially made good on that claim. From humble origins in Long Island and Brooklyn, he earned a global audience that never stops growing. On the two hundredth anniversary of his birth he continues to speak to new generations. The exhibition explores Whitman's process of self-invention, from his early years as a journalist, through the early 1850s when Whitman began to write more privately and poetically, to his final years.
Whitman not only sounded a "barbaric yawp" over the rooftops of the world, but he also helped his country to reconcile its famous contradictions through his inclusivity and his extraordinary body of work. Several of Whitman's notebooks will be on display, as well as his portraitist's copy of Leaves of Grass (1855) and the famous letter written to Whitman by Ralph Waldo Emerson commending that book. The exhibition will establish Whitman's unblinking witness to the Civil War and display the great poems that he wrote in honor of the martyred president including "O Captain! My Captain!" Also on view are documents from Oscar Wilde, Hart Crane, Fe… (read more)

Hogarth: Cruelty and Humor – The Morgan Library & Museum
Through September 22, 2019 – Manhattan

The satirical scenes of the celebrated English artist William Hogarth (1697–1764) are iconic representations of eighteenth-century urban life at a time of great socio-economic disparity. An academic outsider and an activist, Hogarth was driven to innovate, creating new genres and modes of expression in his painting, printmaking, and drawing in his effort to elevate the status of British art. This exhibition will investigate the ways the artist used humor, satire, and political commentary to engage a broad audience and agitate for legislation and political goals.
The exhibition features the Morgan's exceptional cache of six sheets preparatory for two of Hogarth's most revered print series, both issued in February 1751: Beer Street and Gin Lane and The Four Stages of Cruelty. The story of Hogarth's images reveal an artist who addressed the ills and injustices of life in a modern metropolis, exploring the connections between violence, crime, alcohol abuse, and cruelty to animals in ways that would amuse, occasionally shock, and edify his audience.

FROM ANCIENT GREEK HETAERAE TO MADAME X
Courtesans, royal mistresses, scandalous women of every sort—the walls of the Metropolitan Museum are lined with them, from ancient Greek hetaerae to Sargent’s Madame X.
These women, famous not only for sex-appeal but also for their talents—and for a spirit which today we would call ‘entrepreneurial’— fascinated both their wealthy patrons and the artists who created the world’s great masterpieces.
But who were they? How did they rise to their positions? And how did they maintain their prominence despite their scandalous reputations?
OH, THE STORIES YOU’LL HEAR…
To find out, join us as we explore the lives and loves that lie behind the paintings. The Shady Ladies tour will change the way you see the museum — and art itself — forever. On this fun and informative 2-hour Metropolitan Museum tour, we will learn about:
— The first nude female statue in ancient Greece and the hetaera who modeled for it
— The oiran of the pleasure quarter of 18th century Tokyo
— A Venetian courtesan who published books of poetry

E. v. Day: Breaking the Glass Ceiling – Children's Museum of the Arts
Through October 27, 2019 – New York

Known for her gravity-defying suspension sculptures that explore themes of science fiction, space, gender, and humor, E. V. Day illuminates contradictions in gender roles and stretches the confines of social stereotypes. In her new site-specific installation in the central Cynthia C. Wainwright Gallery, E. V. Day will use turnbuckles, monofilament, and angle iron to build multiple suspended trajectories in the ceiling, using the columns and walls as mounting points. Day will employ chains, brass rods, elastic cords, and hardware to build tension, highlight resistance, and imply velocity. The ceiling installation will be complemented by shattered glass images displayed around the perimeter of the gallery referencing cosmic aspirations — the strong desire to achieve something that might feel just outside of one's reach.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs – The Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 – New York

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs brings together drawings, paintings, and photography by the American Modernist artist, while examining the confluence of two seemingly disparate series completed later in his life, Torn Signs and Semana Santa. Though their subject matter is drastically different—one is inspired by tattered advertisements on the streets of New York, while the other depicts observers of Holy Week in Seville, Spain—Crawford connects them through his extraordinary visual memory, working method, and sense of spatial organization. The convergence of these two incredible series culminates in Torn Signs, 1974-76, the powerful, large-scale painting that sits at the thematic center of the exhibition.

Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs – Vilcek Foundation
Through November 13, 2019 – New York

This exhibition and accompanying catalogue examine the confluence of Ralston Crawford's Torn Signs and Semana Santa series, two seemingly disparate themes connected by Crawford’s extraordinary visual memory, working method, and inventiveness. Over the course of four decades, Crawford recorded, transformed, and often merged his experiences and memories in photographs, drawings, etchings, paintings, and film. In 1938, Crawford first photographed a ripped and pasted over sign on the street in Philadelphia.
Crawford returned to the theme frequently in the last thirty years of his life, capturing the layered and weathered advertisements plastered around New York City. During this time, he also traveled frequently to Seville, Spain and in 1972, documented the experience of Holy Week. Crawford drew inspiration from a constellation of memory and invention that flowed in multiple directions at once. For him, the rhythmic images of hooded penitents processing through the streets for Holy Week recalled formal elements of his Torn Signs imagery. The convergence of these two incredible series culminated in the powerful, large-scale painting Torn Signs, 1974-76 (Vilcek Foundation Collection)…. (read more)

Picasso's Le Tricorne – New-York Historical Society
Through December 31, 2020 – Upper West Side

Now on display at the New-York Historical Society is a newly acquired and conserved Picasso in the exhibition Picasso's "Le Tricorne." It is the first work by Picasso, and one with great wall power and a New York history, to enter New-York Historical's collection.
Pablo Picasso painted the stage curtain for the two-act ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (El sombrero de tres picos or Le tricorne). The ballet and curtain were commissioned by the impresario Sergei Diaghilev for his avant-garde, Paris-based Ballets Russes, the most influential ballet company of the twentieth-century. The ballet was choreographed by Léonide Massine with music by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. It premiered on July 22, 1919, at the Alhambra Theatre in London with sets, costume designs, and the monumental stage curtain created by Picasso. Picasso biographer John Richardson once called "Le Tricorne" the artist's "supreme theatrical achievement." The production, which was conceived by Diaghilev and Massine during a trip to Spain, was enhanced by its many Spanish collaborators, including Picasso who also designed the costumes and set for the ballet.
Measuring roughly 20 feet square, the curtain depict… (read more)

Gin Fizz is a supper club right next to Red Rooster Harlem and conveniently located steps away from the 2/3 Train's 125th Street stop on Lenox Ave. You will think you exited the subway and stepped into the kind of jazz age speakeasy which brought this neighborhood international fame during Prohibition and the Harlem Renaissance.
